Remember · What Projects Pin, What Memory Learns.
Every new chat, you paste the same background again. Claude remembers it two ways: one you pin by hand (a Project's knowledge base plus custom instructions), one it learns on its own from your chats (Memory, on every tier as of 2026-07). This chapter covers how the two split the work — and when to switch it off with an Incognito chat.
Every new chat, you paste the same background again — who I am, what this project is, the tone I want. Claude already remembers all this two ways: one you pin by hand, one it learns on its own. One is Projects: you pin a fixed set of files and an instruction into a workspace. The other is Memory: it distills your preferences and habits from past chats. This chapter covers how the two divide the work, and where each one's edge is — including when to switch memory off. Before splitting them apart, name the layers Claude remembers you on — a plain chat is the default and disperses when you're done; what actually persists are the few below, each minding its own job, and they shouldn't be mixed:

A Project Pins Conventions.
A Project pins what you don't want to say twice. Claude Help Center · What are projects — upload docs, code, and text to a project's knowledge base and write project instructions that apply to every chat inside it. Claude Help Center · Create and manage projects — each project carries a 200K window (about a 500-page book); on paid plans it switches to retrieval (RAG) as knowledge nears the limit, expanding capacity ~10x.A Project pins two things into one workspace: a fixed set of files (the knowledge base) and a custom instruction (tone, role, rules) that applies to every chat inside it.1注 1Note 1Claude 帮助中心 · 什么是 Projects —— 把文档、代码、文字上传到项目知识库,并写一段项目指令,作用于该项目内的所有对话。Claude Help Center · What are projects — upload docs, code, and text to a project's knowledge base and write project instructions that apply to every chat inside it. Each project carries a 200K window, roughly a 500-page book; on paid plans it shifts to retrieval (RAG) as knowledge nears the limit, expanding usable capacity ~10x.2注 2Note 2Claude 帮助中心 · 创建与管理 Projects —— 每个项目带 200K 上下文(约一本 500 页的书);付费档在知识接近上限时自动启用检索(RAG),把容量扩到约 10 倍。Claude Help Center · Create and manage projects — each project carries a 200K window (about a 500-page book); on paid plans it switches to retrieval (RAG) as knowledge nears the limit, expanding capacity ~10x. What belongs in the knowledge base? Things you cite repeatedly and that hold for half a year: samples of your writing voice, a team glossary, a long-term client's background, a spec you check against daily. What doesn't: one-off exploration, drafts not yet settled, data that expires in a fortnight — put those in and you only add noise for retrieval to wade through. The line is whether this chat still belongs to that long-term thing. If it does, open it inside the Project so it inherits the knowledge base and instruction; if it doesn't, use a plain chat and don't pour throwaway material into the workspace — a Project filled wrong gets duller the more you use it.

Memory Learns Your Habits.
Memory isn't pinned — it learns from your chats. 2026-07。Anthropic · Claude Plans & Pricing — memory is listed under the Free tier, i.e. available on every plan. As of 2026-07. 2026-07。Claude Help Center · Use chat search and memory to build on context — memory is on by default, synthesized every 24 hours, kept separate per project; view and edit it under Settings > Capabilities, where you can also pause or reset it; an Incognito chat writes nothing to memory. As of 2026-07. every 24 hours it synthesizes your conversations, capturing the professional layer: your role, the projects you're on, your communication style, your technical preferences. And it's partitioned by project — each one has its own memory space that doesn't mix with other projects or ordinary chats.3注 3Note 3Claude 帮助中心 · 用对话搜索与记忆延续上下文 —— 记忆默认开启、每 24 小时归纳一次、按项目分隔;在「设置 > Capabilities」查看与编辑,也能暂停或重置;隐身对话(Incognito)不写入记忆。截至 2026-07。Claude Help Center · Use chat search and memory to build on context — memory is on by default, synthesized every 24 hours, kept separate per project; view and edit it under Settings > Capabilities, where you can also pause or reset it; an Incognito chat writes nothing to memory. It isn't a black box. Under Settings > Capabilities you can open and edit the memory, read the summary it has formed about you, and fix what's wrong on the spot; you can also just tell it in a chat, 'remember that from now on I want X.'3注 3Note 3Claude 帮助中心 · 用对话搜索与记忆延续上下文 —— 记忆默认开启、每 24 小时归纳一次、按项目分隔;在「设置 > Capabilities」查看与编辑,也能暂停或重置;隐身对话(Incognito)不写入记忆。截至 2026-07。Claude Help Center · Use chat search and memory to build on context — memory is on by default, synthesized every 24 hours, kept separate per project; view and edit it under Settings > Capabilities, where you can also pause or reset it; an Incognito chat writes nothing to memory. As of 2026-07. This matters more than it sounds: what it remembers quietly shapes every answer that follows. The line: what's worth remembering is stable preference — the format you want, the tone, long-term constraints; what isn't is changing state — the temporary project you're busy with this week, which next month only misleads it. Memory should hold habits, not your latest status. Its most hidden cost isn't getting you wrong — it's still remembering the you of three months ago, after you've changed; so it's worth reopening and pruning every so often.
Teach Memory what to keep
Remember these (stable preferences): <my role / long-term constraints / fixed format and tone>.
Don't remember these (changing state): <this week's temporary project / one-off numbers / unsettled exploration>.
Use this once, don't write it to memory: <one-off sensitive info>.
(To check what it kept, open the memory summary under Settings > Capabilities and fix what's wrong on the spot.)
Remember these: I'm a solo developer building iOS utility apps; answer in Chinese, conclusion before detail; code in Swift, no force-unwraps.
Don't remember these: the 'tax-filing app' I'm rushing this week is temporary contract work that ends next month — don't treat it as my long-term direction.
Use this once, don't write it to memory: this is a client's real name and contract amount.
(To check what it kept, open the memory summary under Settings > Capabilities and fix what's wrong on the spot.)

When to Switch Memory Off.
Remembering too much is sometimes a burden. What you pin (a Project's instruction) is an explicit convention — you decide; what it accumulates (Memory) is an implicit habit — it infers; when the two conflict, the Project instruction wins. But some work you simply don't want it to remember: one-off sensitive data, a stray question unrelated to your routine, exploration that hasn't settled and you'd rather it not learn crooked. For those, open an Incognito chat (the ghost icon when you start a new one) — it's temporary and writes nothing to memory.3注 3Note 3Claude 帮助中心 · 用对话搜索与记忆延续上下文 —— 记忆默认开启、每 24 小时归纳一次、按项目分隔;在「设置 > Capabilities」查看与编辑,也能暂停或重置;隐身对话(Incognito)不写入记忆。截至 2026-07。Claude Help Center · Use chat search and memory to build on context — memory is on by default, synthesized every 24 hours, kept separate per project; view and edit it under Settings > Capabilities, where you can also pause or reset it; an Incognito chat writes nothing to memory. As of 2026-07. To go further, pause memory in Settings (keep the old, add no new) or reset it (wipe and start over). Switching it off isn't a step back — it returns its attention to what actually deserves remembering. Skills。One line settles the division with Skills: Projects pin context, Skills pin method — one holds 'the background of this thing,' the other holds 'how this kind of thing is done.' The next chapter is Skills. Apply this to something you've repeated this month:
01
ProjectPick a re-paste task and build a Project
Find a task you've done 3+ times this month where you re-explain the same background each time; build a Project, add the fixed files, and write a custom instruction to pin it.
02
After a few chats, check what Memory captured
Chat a few rounds inside the Project, then the next day open its memory summary under Settings > Capabilities — check whether it got you right, and fix what's wrong on the spot.
03
Take a one-off into an Incognito chat
Pick a one-off question you don't want remembered, ask it in an Incognito chat, and confirm it entered no memory. Note which to pin and which to forget.
What you pin is conventions,
what it accumulates is habits.
